Charleston Catholic Legacy: Mackenzie Schumacher’s Lasting Impact Charleston Catholic High School has produced many outstanding athletes over the years, but few have left a legacy as strong as Mackenzie Schumacher. A standout during her time at CCHS, Schumacher exemplified dedication, leadership, and excellence both on and off the court. Schumacher describes her years as a Charleston Catholic athlete as some of the most meaningful of her life. The friendships she built and the memories she created throughout four seasons of competition remain highlights of her athletic career. Her most unforgettable moment came during her senior year, when she helped lead the Irish to a state championship — the culmination of years of hard work alongside her teammates and coaches. That same season proved historic on a personal level as well, as Schumacher was named State Player of the Year and West Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year while also surpassing the 2,000-point mark for her high school career. After graduating from Charleston Catholic, Schumacher continued her basketball journey at High Point University, competing at the NCAA Division I level. She started all four years of her collegiate career, finishing with over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 200 blocks — an impressive testament to her consistency and work ethic. While excelling athletically, she also focused on academics, majoring in Special Education, a field that would shape her future beyond sports. Today, Schumacher is in her 15th year as a special education teacher, working with students with disabilities — a career she finds deeply rewarding. She currently lives in Jacksonville, Florida with her husband, Nick Schumacher, who is also a Charleston Catholic alumnus and former athlete. Together, they are raising three young children and enjoying life near the beach. Although her playing days have passed, Schumacher’s love for sports remains strong. This January, she will return to the court in a new role, coaching her oldest daughter’s second-grade basketball team, continuing the athletic tradition that began at Charleston Catholic High School. Mackenzie Schumacher’s story is a powerful example of how Charleston Catholic athletics shape not only successful competitors, but lifelong leaders who continue to make an impact long after graduation.
